“Schmidt is also a member of Georgia Military Women. She empowers female veterans through the She Served Initiative, her nonprofit, but finds encouragement herself through Georgia Military Women.
“Nothing is ever intentional or in a mean-spirited way it is just that the image of a veteran is typically a male,” said Schmidt. “That is what Georgia Military Women does very well is give us a voice.”

“It is just an honor to be around her. I was saying earlier, we are a little star-struck,” said Martina Schmidt, with the She Served Initiative.
The She Served Initiative works to tell the stories of female veterans so they are not forgotten. The nonprofit, founded by a veteran, highlights veterans across the country on their platforms; documenting them to keep their story alive.
“We photograph all women veterans, from all services and all generations. We are to this day, unfortunately, invisible sometimes to the public,” said Schmidt.

The She Served Initiative started as a passion project while running my photography business “Martina’s Images”. That passion grew, and I found myself spending more and more time photographing and telling the story of women veterans. I then decided to devote all my efforts to photographing women veterans and telling their story and founded the non-profit organization the “She Served Initiative”.
We are now a 501 c 3 non-profit organization registered in Georgia. As a professional photographer and female veteran, I felt I could contribute in a small way to bring much-deserved attention to women veterans.
